Researchers from the University of Toronto compared the effectiveness of traditional forensic photography and 3D scanning in crime scene analysis. Using a handheld, color 3D scanner, they digitally captured a human body with simulated tattoos and wounds. The study demonstrated that 3D scanning with Artec Eva offers better geometric details and color accuracy than traditional photography. It also significantly reduces documentation time, completing the task in nearly half the time taken by photography.
3D scanning has substantial advantages over traditional methods, providing rich datasets and preserving evidence more effectively for forensic investigations.
